Is it permissible to sell a commodity that has been purchased and paid for, but is still in the possession of the original seller, who then ships it directly to the customer for a fee?

If the commodity is food, it must be taken possession of before selling it, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever buys food should not sell it until he takes possession of it." However, if it is not food, scholars have differed on the ruling of selling it before taking possession. Nevertheless, the preponderant opinion is the necessity of taking possession of the sold item absolutely before selling it, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition of selling goods where they are bought until merchants transport them to their own places. Possession can be actual or constructive. Constructive possession is considered sufficient, and it means enablement, relinquishment, and the removal of impediments according to custom and common practice. The evidence for the sufficiency of constructive possession is the hadith about the Prophet's (peace be upon him) sale of Umar's camel, where the camel entered the Prophet's ownership immediately upon the contract without actual possession.
