Is the wife obligated to observe the waiting period ('iddah) if she is granted a divorce due to her husband's absence for three years, and how long is it?

Once the court issues a divorce decree for the husband, the wife enters her waiting period ('iddah (definition)). The 'iddah varies according to the woman's situation: three menstrual cycles for those who menstruate, three months for those who have reached menopause or do not menstruate, and childbirth for pregnant women. Allah Almighty says: "And those of your women who have despaired of menstruation, if you have doubts, then their waiting period is three months, and those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they deliver their burdens." The 'iddah begins from the date of divorce, whether initiated by the husband or the court, and legally ends upon seeing three menstrual cycles, or the passage of three months, or childbirth if she is pregnant. As for an in absentia divorce from the court, the 'iddah does not begin until the ruling becomes final, either by the expiration of the objection and appeal period without any objection, or by its affirmation after an appeal. If the husband is missing and his whereabouts are unknown, the wife must observe the 'iddah of widowhood, which is "four months and ten days."
