The father's wife is not a kin with whom maintaining ties is obligatory. Keeping distance from her is better if it brings peace of mind, wards off harm, and reduces animosity. However, it is preferable to be patient and continue maintaining ties with her, because it is a way of repelling evil with good, and it pleases the father, as long as no harm results from communicating with her.
