What is the ruling on a father who neglects the care of his children, wants to evict his married son and divorce his wife who bears the household expenses, and resorts to sorcerers, and is it permissible to file lawsuits to claim the rights of the wife and children in this case?
It is recommended to be patient with the father and supplicate for him, and to be keen on honoring him and showing kindness to him, even if he mistreats you. That does not negate the obligation to honor him. Among the greatest acts of honoring is to strive for his rectification. The father is not obligated to provide a dowry or trousseau for his daughter. The issue of a father marrying off his poor son is subject to scholarly dispute. Divorce is permissible, but it should not be resorted to without need. If it occurs, the wife has the right to demand her entitlements. It is not permissible to place the father under guardianship for the reasons mentioned. If he abstains from providing maintenance, it is permissible to take the equivalent amount from his property or to refer the matter to the judiciary.
