What is the ruling on a husband neglecting his wife and leaving her without inquiry or financial support for a long time? And is obedience to parents obligatory even if they are unjust, given that the cause of disputes stems from their demanding her to associate with his brothers and maternal uncles and serve them in the house, and to wear the headscarf only on her head, in addition to the husband accusing her of disrespect and his desire to divorce her without paying the deferred dower?

If a husband abandons his wife, sends her to her family's home, and wishes to divorce her without paying the deferred dowry, then he is unjust and has mistreated their companionship. Obedience to parents is obligatory in what is right and good. Divorcing a wife without a valid reason is not an act of righteousness. Ibn Muflih said: "I do not approve of him divorcing because of the hadith of Ibn 'Umar concerning the father." Ahmad said: "If the father commands him to divorce, he should divorce if the father is just." Shaykh Taqi al-Din said: "It is not permissible for him to divorce her. Rather, he must treat her kindly, and divorcing his wife is not part of treating her kindly." The wife's obedience to her husband is obligatory in what is right and good. She is not obligated to obey or serve his mother. However, showing kindness to the husband's family is part of fulfilling the companionship in a proper manner. If reconciliation between the spouses is not effective, the wife may refer her case to the Sharia judge, who will order the husband to treat her kindly or divorce her while fulfilling her legitimate rights.
