The answer

If one of the parents dies and leaves behind four sons and only one daughter, the inheritance is divided among them such that the male receives the share of two females. This means the daughter gets one share, and each son gets two shares. Thus, the inheritance is divided into nine shares. This division occurs after covering the expenses of preparing and shrouding the deceased, settling their debts, and executing their bequests. The proof for this is the Almighty Allah’s saying: (Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females... [This is] after any bequest which was made or debt) (An-Nisa/11). If there are other heirs (such as the father, mother, grandfather, grandmother), they are given their share first, and then the remaining inheritance is divided among the children. In the event of one spouse predeceasing the other, the surviving spouse inherits from the deceased (the husband inherits one-fourth from his wife, and the wife inherits one-eighth from her husband), then the remainder is divided among the children, with the male receiving the share of two females.
