What should a wife do whose husband mistreats and beats her, threatens her with divorce and with not claiming the child in her womb, and wastes his money on the internet and phone calls? Should she go to her family's house to get a divorce, or should she be patient?

Divorce should not be resorted to except when all means of reconciliation have become impossible. If it is possible for the spouses to live together and associate in a good and honorable manner, that is preferable to separation. The wife should discuss with her husband and understand the reasons for his mistreatment. If it is due to a shortcoming on her part, she must remedy it, associate with him honorably, be a good wife to him, and cooperate with him in obedience to Allah. If the husband persists in his mistreatment, the wife should consult with the wise people among her family, weigh the harm of divorce against the harm of remaining with him, and choose the lesser of the two harms, while seeking Allah's help and supplicating Him frequently.
