What are the consequences for one who masturbates during the daytime in Ramadan, whether ignorantly or knowingly of the ruling? Is he required to make up (qada') for it and offer expiation (kaffara) if another Ramadan passes, whether with or without an excuse? What is the expiation, and is it permissible to give its monetary value? Is the intention for expiation obligatory when giving it?

If someone masturbates out of ignorance that it invalidates the fast, their fast is not broken. If one delays making up missed Ramadan fasts due to a valid excuse, there is nothing upon them except to make up the fasts. However, if they delay it without a valid excuse, then in addition to making up the fasts, they must pay a fidyah (expiatory feeding) of one poor person's meal for each day, unless they were ignorant of the impermissibility of delaying the make-up fasts, in which case nothing is upon them. The amount of the fidyah is a mudd of food (approximately 750 grams of rice). It is more cautious to give it as food. If one appoints someone to pay the fidyah on their behalf, they must inform them that it is an expiation.
