What is the Sharia ruling on a husband preventing his wife from conceiving, based on his sole desire?

A husband is not permitted to use contraception except with his wife's consent. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged having many children and showed disinclination towards a woman who does not bear children. The sustenance of children is decreed for them while they are in their mothers' wombs, so one should not abandon procreation for fear of poverty.
