Is it true that Satan swells with joy when cursed, and if so, how can we curse him without him rejoicing? Is it permissible to curse a specific person, such as an oppressor, or is cursing restricted to general statements like "May the curse of Allah be upon the oppressors"? And is it permissible to curse a specific individual like Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul?

Cursing Satan is permissible because he is cursed by Allah Almighty. However, do not say "may Satan stumble" (taasa al-shaytan) because he would gloat over it. Instead, seek refuge with Allah from him and say "Bismillah (in the name of Allah)." Allah Almighty commanded seeking refuge from Satan, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought refuge from him and cursed him. It is permissible to curse Iblis and disbelievers who died upon disbelief. As for cursing a specific Muslim, it is not permissible. However, it is permissible to curse those with blameworthy characteristics, such as oppressors and idol-makers. Cursing a specific individual is disliked unless it is known that they died upon disbelief.
