What is the ruling on a woman wearing a wig to make her long hair appear shorter when she is only among other women, and not for the purpose of lengthening her hair?

It was authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "Allah has cursed the woman who adds hair extensions and the woman who asks for them to be added." For this reason, many scholars have prohibited wearing wigs. However, some scholars have held that placing hair on the head without attaching it (like a wig) does not fall under this prohibition, but caution and precaution are preferred. A woman who wishes to shorten her hair may do so, as the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "used to cut their hair until it reached the abundance of a 'Wafrah'" (a type of bob). If she wishes to conceal its length from people, she can coil her hair, place the khimar (head covering) over it, and tighten it with the khimar.
