Is abandoning prayer the greatest sin after polytheism (shirk), and greater than murder, theft, disobedience to parents, adultery, and taking people's money, and does it necessitate execution as a legal punishment (hadd) or due to apostasy (kufr)?

Prayer holds immense significance in Islam; it is the second pillar after the two testimonies of faith, and the first matter for which a servant will be questioned. Abandoning prayer is a grave sin, and scholars have agreed upon its enormity, though they have differed on whether one who abandons it out of laziness is considered a disbeliever.

The greatest sins after associating partners with Allah are unlawfully taking a life, and then adultery, especially adultery with a neighbor's wife, due to the corruption of lineages that results from it. These sins are grave, even if their ranks differ according to the harms they entail.

The fact that one who abandons prayer is executed as a prescribed punishment, according to the view that he is not a disbeliever, does not mean it is greater than all other transgressions. For instance, a deliberate murderer is executed in retribution, a married fornicator is stoned, and a combatant is killed, which also indicates the seriousness of these transgressions.

Committing any sin, whatever it may be, is a grave danger that exposes its perpetrator to Allah's wrath and punishment.
