Is the meaning of "who enumerates them" in the hadith about the Beautiful Names of Allah to memorize them by heart or merely to utter them? And is knowledge of their precise meanings a prerequisite? And is the meaning of "Recite and ascend [through the ranks of Paradise as you] recite the Qur'an" on the Day of Resurrection to have memorized it and to recite what has been memorized, or merely to recite even without memorization?

Scholars have differed on the meaning of the Hadith "Whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise" according to several opinions:

1. Memorization: Al-Nawawi and others preferred that the intention is to memorize these names, which is explained in other narrations as "Whoever memorizes them." 2. Acting upon them: It was said that the intention is to act upon the implications of these names, not merely to count and memorize them, because that could be done by a disbeliever or a hypocrite. 3. Counting and acting upon them: This means that Allah has names that must be acknowledged and submitted to (such as Al-Ahad - The One), and names whose meanings it is desirable to emulate and embody (such as Al-Rahim - The Most Merciful, and Al-Kareem - The Most Generous). Thus, practical enumeration is achieved thereby, while verbal enumeration is achieved by collecting them, memorizing them, and supplicating with them.
