Does the unemployed university graduate, who possesses a Nisab of money, yet it is insufficient to cover the expenses of marriage or the necessities of life, deserve Zakat given to him by another young man who acquired his money from a mine? It is permissible for a poor person who cannot afford to marry to take from , even if he owns a that is insufficient to cover his needs. As for the Zakat on wealth extracted from the earth, Zakat is obligatory on gold and silver. For other (minerals), there is a difference of opinion among scholars, and the preponderant view is that Zakat is obligatory on them, amounting to a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) of their value upon extraction. If these resources become merchandise for trade, then Zakat on trade goods becomes obligatory on them. Unlawful wealth is not subject to Zakat, nor should it be destroyed; rather, it should be spent on the public welfare of Muslims.
