Is it permissible for a woman who has had a miscarriage to fast, or must she wait for a specific period?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A woman experiencing post-natal bleeding (nifas) is not permitted to fast, and she must make up for the missed fasts. Blood is considered nifas if a woman miscarries something in which human creation is discernible. Creation (takhleeq) does not begin before 80 days of pregnancy. Accordingly, if the miscarriage occurs before 80 days, the blood is considered irregular bleeding (istihada). If it occurs after 120 days, it is nifas. If it occurs between 80 and 120 days, it is considered nifas if creation is discernible in the miscarried fetus; otherwise, it is istihada. If the bleeding continues for more than 40 days, it is considered menstruation (hayd) if it coincides with her regular period; otherwise, it is istihada.
