Will Allah hold the wife accountable for not interacting with her husband in bed, as a result of her hatred for him, after the husband repeatedly abandoned her, withheld her legitimate rights, and mistreated her?

A wife must fulfill her husband's right to conjugal relations in a reasonable manner. This right is not forfeited due to her dislike of him or his abandonment of her. Rather, she must submit herself willingly and responsively, as long as he does not command her to do what is forbidden.

The right to conjugal relations is forfeited in specific cases: material excuses (such as incapacity and harm), and legitimate religious excuses (such as obligatory fasting, Ihram, menstruation, and post-natal bleeding), or if the husband refrains from providing the obligatory maintenance, or if the husband waives his right.

If there is no legitimate religious justification, then the wife's failure to fulfill this right makes her sinful. The husband is permitted to admonish her, abandon her, and strike her (without causing harm) until she rectifies her behavior.

The right to conjugal relations is not forfeited by the husband's ill-treatment, his abandonment in bed, or the wife's dislike of her husband, based on the Almighty's saying: "And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good."

The wife is advised to address marital problems with patience, sincere advice, and by fully fulfilling the husband's rights, so that her dislike of his behavior does not turn into a dislike of his person, in fulfillment of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
