What is the ruling on wearing a belt around the waist to hold up trousers, and is there any statement from Imam Al-Shafi'i regarding this?

It is permissible for a Muslim to use a belt or similar item to fasten trousers and the like, as long as it does not resemble the "zunnar" worn by Christians around their waists. The disapproval is related to imitating non-Muslims. As for Imam Al-Shafi'i, nothing has been reported from him regarding this matter except what he himself said when mentioning the zunnar. He said to a man who questioned his fatwa, "Do you see a zunnar around my waist? Do you think I have just come out of a church? I say, 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,' and you say to me, 'Do you say this?' It is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and should I not say it?"
