Is it permissible for me to lie to someone who asked me why I didn't answer their call, in order to avoid upsetting them?

Lying is forbidden (haram), and it is not permissible to resort to it except out of necessity or for a recognized legitimate interest that cannot be achieved otherwise. A Muslim can avoid it by using circumlocution (tawriyah) and allusive speech (ma'arid).
