Does the punishment for a major sin differ according to its varying degrees?
Major sins vary in their reprehensibility. The most heinous among them are the seven destructive sins: associating partners with Allah (), sorcery, unlawfully killing a soul, consuming Riba (usury), consuming an orphan's wealth, fleeing from the battlefield, and slandering chaste, unsuspecting women. Ibn Hajar also mentioned other major sins such as fornication (zina), theft, and disobeying one's parents. A minor sin can transform into a major one due to a contextual clue, and a major sin can become an abomination, with the exception of disbelief (kufr), which is the most egregious of all major sins. Major sins differ in their types; some entail a specific worldly punishment (such as murder and fornication), while others do not entail a specific punishment (such as backbiting and disobeying one's parents). A single major sin can also be magnified in gravity depending on the time and place.
