It is permissible to marry another woman provided one is able to provide for her and deal justly between the wives, and to ensure their chastity. The wife has the right to an independent dwelling, but if she agrees to stay with her family or accepts a specific maintenance, that is permissible. According to the of Abu Hanifa, the wife has the right to a dwelling free from the husband's family to ensure her privacy and security, unless she chooses otherwise. If the husband does not spend on his wife after the maintenance has been assessed or agreed upon, the ruler will imprison him for his injustice.
