Do female animals menstruate?

Scholars have discussed the issue of animals that menstruate. Some claim that only four types menstruate: women, rabbits, hyenas, and bats. Al-Jahiz mentioned that the menstruation of rabbits and hyenas is well-known in Arabic poetry, and that people are repulsed by them for this reason. Others claim that all quadrupeds menstruate. A weak hadith (definition) is narrated in Sunan Abi Dawud from Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said concerning the rabbit: "Indeed, it menstruates."
