Is marriage to a woman suffering from pathological lying, and becoming related by marriage to a family in which lying is widespread, something desirable, or should the engagement be annulled?
Pathological lying, where a person is accustomed to it and it becomes a habit, is a blameworthy characteristic that a believer does not acquire, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believer may have all characteristics except treachery and lying." If the girl is insistent on lying and takes it lightly, this is a blemish on her religious commitment, so marriage to her is not advised. Her righteousness is not harmed by her father being a liar or her family being dysfunctional.
It is not permissible to accuse the girl or her father of lying without proof, because this is a form of ill-suspicion, which is forbidden.
You must inquire about the girl from trustworthy people. If they speak well of her, then proceed with the marriage; otherwise, leave her. Breaking off an engagement is permissible out of necessity and disliked without necessity. Istikhara (seeking guidance from Allah) is performed after two cycles of voluntary prayer.
