Am I obligated to obey my parents in their refusal of my marriage to a girl I love, knowing that they swore by Allah that my wife would not be from among my relatives?

It is not easy to rule that a father preventing his children from marrying their relatives constitutes disobedience ( 'Uquq ), due to the differing opinions among scholars regarding the precise definition of obedience to parents and what actions are considered forbidden forms of 'Uquq.

Since the reason for the father's oath and the potential harm resulting from it are unknown, we advise obeying him and avoiding anything that displeases him. This is because obedience to the father in this matter, even if not obligatory, is an act of drawing closer to Allah the Almighty.
