What is to be done about not adhering to the initial vow, made upon the father’s recovery, to stop watching movies, memorize parts of the Quran, and quit smoking, followed by adherence to it later due to a panic attack? Is expiation required?

This vow, contingent on the father's recovery, must be fulfilled by memorizing the mentioned parts of the Quran and refraining from watching movies and smoking. If the one who made the vow does not fulfill it, he has sinned in two ways (disobedience and breach of vow), and he must repent and offer an expiation for breaking an oath, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The expiation for a vow is the expiation for an oath." The expiation for an oath is: freeing a slave, or feeding ten poor people, or clothing them; and whoever cannot find [the means] should fast for three days. If he combined in his words both a vow and an oath, and broke them before offering expiation, only one expiation is required of him.
