God afflicts the believer with calamities as an expiation for their sins and a raising of their ranks. For every ailment there is a cure, which may be known or unknown. Therefore, it is necessary to consult specialists in psychiatry and organic medicine. The illness may also be due to envy (hasad), the evil eye (ayn), or sorcery (sihr). In such cases, seeking ruqya (Islamic exorcism) by oneself or through an upright person is recommended, while being wary of soothsayers and diviners. It is advisable not to pay attention to obsessive thoughts (waswas) and to repel them, as this is a sign of goodness.
