What should I do with my sister who abuses me and accuses me of evil, and hangs up on me when I try hard to maintain ties of kinship with her?
The Quran and Sunnah urge maintaining kinship ties, and Allah Almighty has associated the severing of kinship with corruption on earth. If the ill-treatment from your sister is due to a religious matter, then be patient and seek reward [from Allah], and have compassion for her. But if it is due to a worldly matter, then repel [evil] with what is better and meet harm with kindness and patience, as stated in His Almighty saying: "Repel [evil] with [that which is] better; then suddenly the one whom between you and him was enmity will become as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good]." The noble Hadith mentions that whoever maintains ties with his relatives while they cut him off, it is as if he is feeding them hot ashes, and he will continue to have a supporter from Allah against them.
