Will a child be afflicted in this worldly life because of the sins of his parents?

The fundamental principle in Islamic law is that no one is held accountable for the transgression of another, as Allah Almighty says: "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another." Nevertheless, the righteousness of parents can benefit their children, and their corruption can be a cause of affliction for their offspring. Allah Almighty says: "And let those [parents] fear who, if they left behind them weak offspring, would fear for them. So let them fear Allah and speak words of appropriate counsel." Thus, the piety of ancestors can be a reason for Allah's preservation and success for their descendants, and sins are among the greatest causes of corruption, whereas piety is among the greatest causes of righteousness.
