Do the parents sin if their seventeen-year-old son does something forbidden?

The fundamental principle in Islamic law is that no one bears the sin of another. Allah states: "And every soul earns not [anything] except for itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another." Nevertheless, parents are obligated to raise their children well. Allah says: "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire." They are responsible for any shortcomings in their upbringing and will be sinful if they aid their child in disobedience or facilitate it for them. One should avoid sins and strive to obey Allah so that one may grow up in His worship, thereby becoming among those whom Allah shades on the Day of Judgment.
