Is someone who quarrels with another person because the latter is a bad companion considered to fall under the ruling of "one who quarrels" (al-mushahin), mentioned in the hadith about the night of mid-Sha’ban: “Allah looks upon all of His creation on the night of mid-Sha’ban and forgives all of His creation except for a polytheist or one who quarrels”?

The animosity mentioned in the Hadith, which prevents the forgiveness of sins, is enmity and hatred stemming from selfish desires. However, animosity for the sake of religion, such as showing hostility towards and shunning a transgressor or an innovator, does not prevent forgiveness. Shunning a bad companion is permissible and does not fall under the animosity that prevents forgiveness. But if the animosity is due to selfish desires and not because he is a bad companion or for a reason for which Islamic law permits shunning, then it falls under the forbidden disputes and shunning.
