Will whoever built houses in excess of his needs and paid their obligatory zakat carry them on his back on the Day of Resurrection?

There is no hadith stating that whoever builds more than his need will carry his building on his back on the Day of Resurrection. Rather, what one carries on his back is what he took unjustly, like ill-gotten gains. As for expanding in construction, jurists have agreed on the obligation of building what covers a person and his family from prying eyes, cold, and heat. Expanding in construction is permissible if its owner fulfills all of Allah's rights. However, a Muslim should not over-expand in worldly matters and should limit himself to what he needs, based on the verses that prohibit extravagance. Houses built for dwelling are not subject to zakat, even if their value increases. Rented houses are subject to zakat on their rent if it reaches the nisab and a year has passed. As for houses built for sale, zakat is due on them because they are trade goods, and the amount of their zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) of their total value.
