What is the explanation of the hadith: "Do you know about this night? For there will not come a hundred years upon any living soul on the face of the earth today but that they will be dead by then"?

The meaning of the hadith is clear and realistic, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stated that none of those present in his era would live for more than one hundred years. This is indeed what happened, as the last of the Companions to pass away was Abu al-Tufayl ibn Waathilah in the year 110 AH. It was narrated by Al-Bukhari from Abdullah ibn Umar. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar and others explained the hadith to mean that the intent was the passing away of the generation of Companions who were alive that night within one hundred years from the date of the hadith, and not a negation of the life of those born thereafter. They also stated that this hadith is one of the proofs of the Prophet's prophethood, peace and blessings be upon him. Scholars have used it as evidence to refute the claim of some Sufis that Al-Khidr is still alive to this day.
