What is the meaning of the Hadith: "The lifespans of my Ummah are between sixty and seventy, and few of them will exceed that," given the increasing human lifespans today and scientists' predictions of further increases in the future, and the long lifespans of the Jinn from the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him)?

Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The lifespans of my Ummah are between sixty and seventy years, and few of them will exceed that." The intent of this hadith is that the majority of the lifespans of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fall within these limits. Exceptions are made for some individuals who exceed seventy or do not reach sixty. As for the issue that the majority of human lifespans today exceed sixty and seventy, this is not considered contrary to the hadith, for the hadith speaks about the Prophet's Ummah from his mission until the Day of Judgment, and not about a specific period of time.

As for the lifespans of the Jinn, there is no evidence that they reach hundreds of years. Rather, they die just like humans, due to Allah's saying: {Everyone upon it will perish}, and the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "I seek refuge in Your might, there is no god but You, who does not die, while Jinn and humans die." Some scholars have held that the Jinn are included in the generality of the hadith about the lifespans of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), because they are part of this Ummah to whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) explicitly stated that the Jinn die, and that only Iblis is given respite until the Day of Judgment.
