Why has the treatment of my sisters and mother changed after my father's death, even though I performed Hajj on behalf of my father and mother, spared nothing, and take nothing from the house like my married brothers, despite being unemployed with two children and receiving poor treatment from my family?
The questioner is advised to be patient with his mother's harshness and ill-treatment, while continuously showing her piety and kindness, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And with parents, do good." This is because the mother's right is more emphasized. Patience with the harshness of siblings is also obligatory, for the true maintainer of ties is he who connects with those who cut him off and shows kindness to those who mistreat him, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The maintainer of ties is not the one who reciprocates, but the maintainer of ties is he who, when his ties of kinship are cut, reconnects them."
If the mother singles out some siblings for gifts and money to the exclusion of the questioner:
- If it is from the father's inheritance, then this is forbidden and impermissible. The questioner has the right to demand his share from it, and this is not considered disobedience. - If it is from her own private wealth, it is also impermissible, as Islamic law forbids preferring some children over others in gifts and endowments.
The questioner is advised to counsel his mother gently. If she persists, he should entrust his affair to Allah, while continuing to show her piety and supplicating for her guidance. It is not permissible for the siblings to take the money if they know that the questioner has been deprived of it.
