If a man divorces his wife after the legitimate marriage contract (aqd shar'i), the divorce takes effect, whether he has consummated the marriage with her or not, and whether the contract was officially registered or not. However, if the utterance of divorce occurred during a state of extreme anger where the divorcing husband does not know what he is saying, then the divorce does not take effect. One must be cautious about using divorce pronouncements in all circumstances, especially at the beginning of married life, as this causes anxiety for the wife and may lead to separation.
