What is the ruling regarding my feelings towards someone I loved before my marriage, and should I continue in my current marriage despite my psychological discomfort with him, and my desire for divorce to marry the one I love?
You must sever ties with the former colleague and live with your husband in kindness. It is not permissible to deny him his right to intimacy or procreation except with his consent. Achieving affection requires patience, overlooking mistakes, and focusing on the good aspects, for love is not a prerequisite for the stability of married life. Divorce is disliked in Islamic law, and a woman is forbidden from seeking it without a valid reason. It is advised not to neglect the husband, to decisively end the previous relationship, and to occupy oneself with what benefits in both religious and worldly matters. If married life cannot be rectified, Khul’ (divorce initiated by the wife) is permissible after consulting wise individuals and performing Istikhara (prayer for guidance).
