What is the ruling on placing the elbows on the ground during prostration, is it permissible for them to touch the ground, and what is the ruling of the Sunnah concerning that?

It is disliked by the jurists to place the elbows on the ground during prostration, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Be moderate in prostration, and let none of you spread his forearms as a dog spreads them." The Sunnah is for the worshipper to keep his elbows away from his sides and raise them off the ground.
