Is a mother sinful for favoring one of her children in giving to help him with marriage and debt repayment, and is the son sinful for accepting these gifts?
Equality between children in gifts and endowments is obligatory, unless there is a need that necessitates preference, and the mother is like the father in this regard. As for expenditures, equality is not obligatory in them due to their variation depending on the children's circumstances. So, if a father equips his son for marriage in a customary manner, or gives him money to pay off his debt, he is not obligated to give the others the like of it. However, if he exceeds what is customary, or gives him money without a need, then he must equalize among all the children, either by retracting what one of them was favored with, or by completing the share of the others.
