"Nushuz" refers to a wife's disobedience to her husband and her refusal to fulfill her marital obligations of obedience in what is lawful. The expressions of the jurists (fuqaha') agree on this meaning. Due to nushuz, a wife may lose her right to maintenance (nafaqah) and dwelling (sakan). A husband is permitted to discipline his rebellious wife through admonition, then by abandoning her in bed, and then by non-violent striking.
