Which phrases of the iqamah do worshippers stand for?

Scholars differ regarding the time to stand for prayer during the iqamah. Al-Shafi'i held that they stand when the iqamah is finished. Abu Hanifa held that they stand when the muezzin says, "Hayya 'ala al-Salah (Hasten to the prayer)." The Hanbalis held that they stand when he says, "Qad qamati al-Salah (The prayer has been established)." Malik, however, held that there is no specific time for standing; rather, it depends on the people's ability. This view is closer to correctness due to the absence of any specific text from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the differing practices of the Salaf.

However, if the Imam is not present at the time of the iqamah, the congregants should not stand until they see him. This is the view of Abu Hanifa, Al-Shafi'i, and Ahmad, based on the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "When the prayer is established, do not stand until you see me."
