The question

What should I do to end the dispute between my wife and my mother, who interferes in our lives? Is my wife's speaking about my mother's actions considered backbiting, especially if she feels hurt and has not spoken before? And what is the solution to this problem upon returning home?

The answer

The mother's right is great, and honoring her is obligatory. However, if the mother interferes in her son's wife's affairs and harms her, the son should advise her gently, or through someone whose advice she accepts from among the relatives. There is no blame upon the wife for mentioning what is happening to those who will reconcile between them. The husband should wisely mend the relationship between them, and he is permitted to convey words that foster affection between them, even if they are not entirely true, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "He is not a liar who reconciles between people and says good things and conveys good things." The wife should also be reminded of the virtue of being kind to her husband's family. The husband must honor his mother and live with his wife in kindness, without oppressing either of them; so let him give everyone their due right.
