The answer

There is no explicit revealed text that defines the nature of the meteor (shahab). However, what the scholars have stated is that a meteor is what we see in the sky as if a star is falling, or a bright flame of fire that appears to the observer in the form of a column. The meteors with which devils are pelted may not be fixed stars, and sometimes they burn the devil and sometimes they do not. The proof for the sending of meteors upon devils is what came in the hadith from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them): "The devils have been prevented from hearing news of the heavens, and meteors have been sent upon them."
