The question

What is the interpretation of the verse: "And We have guarded it from every outcast satan except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear flaming fire," and can devils come to know the news of the heavens, and do these meteors kill them or merely harm them, and does the killing occur after the news is delivered or before it?

The answer

The meaning of the noble verse is: "We have guarded the heaven from every rebellious devil, so none can reach it except he who steals a hearing, whereupon a bright flame pursues him and burns him." The devils try to hear the words of the angels concerning God's future decree. If they hear anything, they convey it to soothsayers, and a devil might convey a word before being burned by the meteor. When God decrees a matter in heaven, the eavesdropper hears it and conveys the word to those beneath him until it reaches the sorcerer or soothsayer. The meteor might catch him before he conveys it, or he might convey it before it catches him, in which case he adds a hundred lies to it, and people believe that one word.
