Is it obligatory to repeat the prayers that were performed with a garment containing a hole through which the 'awrah was exposed, and if repetition is obligatory, how should these prayers be made up if the duration of the 'awrah's repeated exposure is unknown?

Scholars agree that covering the 'awrah (intimate parts) is a condition for the validity of prayer. The evidence for this is the Almighty's saying: (O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque).

The clothing that covers the 'awrah must meet the following conditions: 1. It must not reveal the skin. 2. It must be pure (tahir), based on the Almighty's saying: (And your garments purify). 3. It must be permissible (mubah (definition)) and not forbidden.

Regarding the exposure of the 'awrah during prayer: Imam Al-Shafi'i said: If any part of a man's or woman's 'awrah—other than the face and hands—is exposed without excuse, the prayer must be repeated. However, if it is exposed due to an excuse, such as wind or falling, and the covering is immediately restored without delay, the prayer is valid.

Ibn Qudamah said: If a small amount of the 'awrah is exposed, the prayer is not invalidated. This is the view of Ahmad and Abu Hanifa, contrary to Al-Shafi'i, who holds that it invalidates the prayer, given the prevalence of the matter and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) not disavowing it.

"Much" is defined as what is indecent to look at, and "little" is what is not indecent; in this regard, custom is the reference.

If the rips reveal a conventionally significant portion of the 'awrah, and it is not possible to cover them, then the prayer is invalid, and the prayers performed with such clothing must be repeated. If the number of such prayers is unknown, one should base it on certainty.
