If someone broke their fast on certain days of Ramadan out of ignorance concerning the obligation of making them up, they must make them up once they learn of this obligation. If they delay making up the fast until the following Ramadan: - If the delay was without a valid excuse, they must make up the fast and feed one poor person for each day. - If the delay was due to a valid excuse (illness or pregnancy), they only need to make up the fast.

If they are unable to make up the fast and it is confirmed by a reliable medical report that there is no hope of recovery from the illness, then the obligation to fast is waived for them, and they must feed one poor person for each day (approximately 750 grams of food). It is permissible to give the expiation (fidyah) to one poor person or to several poor persons.
