The issue of transformation (istihalah) means that if an impure substance undergoes a complete transformation into a different, pure substance, it becomes permissible and lawful to use. The determination of whether transformation has occurred rests with specialists. Doubt about its occurrence maintains the original ruling, which is prohibition. Mere doubt about a substance being forbidden or impure does not lead to a ruling of prohibition, and food is not discarded due to doubt.
