What is the ruling on accepting a scholarship from cigarette manufacturers and conventional banks?

It is forbidden to use, sell, or manufacture cigarettes, as this constitutes cooperation in sin and transgression. Funds obtained from usurious banks are also forbidden.

Forbidden wealth is of two types: 1. Purely forbidden wealth: It is forbidden to engage in transactions with its owner, whether through sale, loan, or accepting a gift. 2. Wealth mixed with lawful wealth: Scholars have permitted dealing with this without dislike in cases where it is indistinguishable, citing the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) dealings with the Jews, who engaged in usury.

If it is established that the wealth is forbidden, it should be spent on public interests such as the poor and the needy. Accordingly, if the recipient of the gift is needy, the gift is permissible for him. If he is not needy and the gift is not purely forbidden, then piety dictates avoiding it.
