Is the wife's son eligible for Zakat, and when is a son eligible for Zakat? Is it permissible for an employee working outside his country to accept Zakat funds, and what should he do about what he previously took if it is not permissible?
It is not permissible to give zakat to those whose maintenance is obligatory upon the giver of zakat, such as ascendants and descendants, as this would result in a benefit accruing to the giver himself. A well-off father must provide for his poor son and his wife. It is permissible for a deserving recipient of zakat to take it even if he is employed, provided his income is insufficient for his needs. Whoever takes zakat while not deserving of it must return it or give its equivalent with the permission of the owner of the money. It is not permissible for one who is an agent for distributing zakat money to take anything from it for himself, except with the owner's permission. If he does not know the exact amount he took, he must strive to estimate it and pay an amount that he believes, most likely, will clear his conscience.
