Is it permissible for a wife to pray in congregation beside her husband at home?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for a husband to lead his wife in prayer, whether it is an obligatory or supererogatory prayer. The Sunnah is for the wife to stand behind him, not beside him, based on the narration of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led us in prayer, so I and the orphan stood in a row behind him, and the old woman stood behind us." This is also because women's rightful place is to be behind, as Ibn Mas'ud said: "Place them where Allah has placed them — behind." The congregational prayer that Sharia encourages is that which is performed in the mosque, so it is not permissible for a man to pray the obligatory prayer at home unless there is a valid Sharia-approved excuse.
