Did the Virgin conceive after the angel appeared to her as a man through natural intercourse, or was her conception a miracle whose details should not be delved into?

Mary, peace be upon her, did not conceive as a result of intercourse, but rather through a breath from the Angel Gabriel, by the power of Allah the Almighty. This was proof of Allah's power in creating Jesus from a mother without a father, just as He created Adam without a father or a mother, and Eve from a father without a mother. This is confirmed by her astonished words: "How can I have a boy while no human has touched me, nor am I unchaste?" [The angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.'"
