An enzyme is a protein molecule that accelerates chemical reactions in living organisms. An enzyme extracted from a pig is impure (najis), and it should not be used if a pure alternative is available. If no alternative is found, there is no harm in using it out of necessity for purposes other than the human body, in accordance with the view of some jurists who permit the use of impure substances out of necessity for things separated from the body, such as using wine to extinguish a fire, or feeding carrion to falcons.
